Testing trailer brakes?

So i need to test my trailer brakes (electric) and I’ve been advised to apply 12 volts to the wire and test them. Should I just take a wire from a car battery or something and plug it in? And will i hear the brakes activate or do i need to spin the tires (jacked up) and apply the 12 volts?
